Integrated Unit 1: Sense of Self

Same, Same, but Different

Essential Questions

  • How can I use my senses to learn about the world around me?
  • What makes each of us special?
  • How does my school family play a role in my life?

In this unit, students will develop their sense of school and classroom community. Students will work to understand what role they play in their community and how their own five senses help with understanding and connecting to the world around them.

Integrated Unit 3: Patterns are Everywhere

Flow, Spin, Grow

Essential Questions

  • What repeated patterns do I see?
  • Where do I see order?
  • Where do I see patterns in nature?

Patterns show order in the world. In this unit, students will learn to recognize that patterns can be found everywhere in their daily lives. From patterns in nature to patterns in constructed environments, students will discover their different forms and utilize them to make sense of their world. Students will identify events that have repeating patterns, such as noticing that night follows day.

Integrated Unit 5: Systems are Everywhere

Counting on Community

Essential Questions

  • How do our family, school, community, state and nation work together?
  • How do individual people make our community better?
  • Everything is connected to everything.

In this unit, students will learn to recognize that systems are everywhere. Students will discover that a system has parts that work together to serve a purpose. Families, schools, communities and the environment are interconnected and support one another to shape our world.

Integrated Unit 7: Change Occurs Over Time

Four Seasons Make A Year

Essential Questions

  • How are plant life cycles represented in nature?

Change is constant. Change happens everyday and occurs over time. In this unit, students will understand growth and change by observing the world around them. Students will explore the patterns of change in living plants. Students will recognize that some change is predictable, such as the changes to a tree as they grow and throughout the seasons.

Integrated Unit 2: Relationships Exist in Many Forms

One Family
Essential Questions

  • Why are relationships important?
  • What are the different types of relationships?
  • How does my family play a role in my life?

In this unit, students will learn that there are different kinds of relationships. Family and school relationships are an important part of students making sense of their world. Students will explore the various roles they assume in their families and schools. Students will discuss their family structure and reflect on what makes their own families special. Students will become familiar with the diversity of families, and create graphs using data collected from these observations.

Integrated Unit 4: Patterns Have an Internal Order

Essential Questions

  • Where do we see patterns within the year?
  • Where do we see patterns within text (poetry, predictions, sequencing)?
  • What traditions does my family have/celebrate?

In this unit, students will discover that patterns have an internal order. Students will be inspired to look more closely and recognize repeating events that help them make observations about their world. Students will use reasoning skills to make logical connections and predictions based on observable patterns in nature and in family traditions.

Integrated Unit 6: A System May be Influenced by Another System

Can We Help?

Essential Questions

  • How can we help our community?
  • How do community helpers make communities a better place to live in?

Community helpers play a very important role in keeping the community safe and healthy. In this unit, students will find relationships and connections within the community system. Students will analyze how different parts of the community function and interact to make it a better place to live in. In addition, students will recognize that they are part of the community and as such have an effect on its success.

Integrated Unit 8: Change is Necessary for Growth

Essential Questions

  • How are animal cycles represented in nature?
  • What makes a good habitat?

In this unit, students will celebrate growth and change. Students will observe their environment to discover changes and to reflect on why they occur. Students will learn how animals grow and change over time. They will evaluate how animals are uniquely suited to their habitat. Students will also explore their own growth and change throughout Kindergarten. Students will assess how they have changed physically and by the new skills they have learned.
