The start of a new school year is an exciting time for students, but can be challenging as they seek to discover their role in their changing environment. Initially, students form their personal identity and locate their place in their family, as well as, their local community. Exploring the natural and manmade world allows students to determine how to be a good citizen and contribute to their environment. Having a sense of belonging to their family, local community, and natural world around them encourages students to collaborate to create a positive environment.

Integrated Unit 3: Culture and Celebrations

Celebrations Around the World

Essential Questions

  • How does culture shape the way we see ourselves, others, and the world?
  • What is the importance of understanding cultural diversity and inclusiveness?
  • How do cultures connect with one another?
  • What is the impact of earth and space on culture?

America can be seen as a tapestry; created with threads of many traditions, cultures and ethnicities. In early childhood, students are still forming their personal identity. An understanding of their own identity and culture will allow them to make sense of their world and the uniqueness that makes them special. Exposure and understanding of different cultures will create a pathway for student’s to be more accepting of others and gain insight into the world around them. Students will learn how the numerous dynamic cultures of our nation and world change over time and overlap with similarities and differences. All cultures have traditions and understandings focused on the seasons and around the objects in the sky.

Integrated Unit 5: Our Living Planet

  • How is the planet connected?

In a global community, human kind is interconnected and has the ultimate responsibility of caring for our planet. In this unit, students will explore the connections between our planet and the natural systems inhabiting it. Students will identify and describe how geographic locations, including cardinal directions, influence the human characteristics of places such as shelter, clothing, food and activities. Through life cycles, wild life, and the investigations of both living and nonliving things, students will classify, measure and record our natural world.

Integrated Unit 2: Shaping Our World

Why Are There Stripes on the American Flag?

Even at a young age, students recognize factors that shape the world around them including people, objects, symbols, energy, and ideas. In this unit, students will predict and discover how force, motion, and the energy surrounding us contributes to shaping our environment. They will explore holidays and symbols representing America and understand the purposes behind such celebrations. They will examine the influences of historical figures, places and events as well as how ideas are communicated throughout history. Students will explore how both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes create the world around us.

Integrated Unit 4: Winds of Change

A person’s choice influences the world around them, and they have the ability to meet challenges and solve problems through perseverance and innovation. In this unit, students will discover how brave changemakers are willing to explore the unknown and be adventurous. By observing and investigating various patterns and properties, students can identify adaptations to the environment. By utilizing data, students can construct graphs of observations within the natural world to better help navigate the changes that life brings.

Integrated Unit 6: We Are Creators

What Do You Do With An Idea?

Essential Questions

  • How does creativity impact the way we communicate and connect with each other in our world?
  • How do we use our creativity to share ideas and information?
  • What is creativity, and what is its impact on the individual and community?
  • How do all living organisms connect with one another?

Creativity impacts how people communicate and connect throughout the world around us. In this unit, students will discover how humans depend on the interconnectivity of society to meet basic needs, such as through the economy and technology. They will notice how the animal world mimics this interdependence simultaneously through food chains, environment and natural energy. Students will use their imaginations exploring traditional literature and fairy tales to become their own creators.
